Abstract

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to assess the bacteriological indoor air quality in selected houses around Lemna wastes dumpsite in Calabar Metropolis using the settle plate method. The outcome of this study shows that regardless of the sampling periods, all the rooms of ten houses examined for indoor air microbiological quality were more heavily contaminated with bacteria aerosols. The result shows that the total heterotrophic bacterial count ranges from 376cfu/m³ to 712 cfu/m³ and total coliform count ranges from 258cfu/m³ to 598cfu/m³ and coliform count is from 98cfu/m³ to 396cfu/m³. H3F12 had the highest value of the bacterial count of 712 and H10F27 have the lowest fecal coliform count of 98. Prominent bacteria isolated were; Salmonella spp, Proteus spp. Shigella spp, Lactobacillus spp, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The organism with the lowest occurrence in the studied samples were; Proteus spp. 4.7%, Lactobacillus spp. 9.5%, Shigella spp. 9.5%, Salmonella spp 14.2%, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa 14.2% while Escherichia coli at 23.8% and Staphylococcus aureus at 23.2% have the highest occurrence respectively. The concentration of indoor bacterial aerosol observed in this study was above permissive standard and a need for regular check of indoor air quality to prevent spread of airborne diseases.
