Abstract

This study evaluates the toxicity of aqueous and methanol extracts of Dacryodesedulis seed in Wistar rats. These eds were locally obtained from a farmer in the Olobo area of Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria, and identified by a botanist. A total of 45 Wistar rats were divided into nine groups, each consisting offive rats. Group A served as the control, while Groups B, C, D, and E received 250, 500, 1000, and 2000 mg/kg of the aqueous extract of D. edulis seed, respectively. Similarly, Groups F, G, H, and I were administered 250, 500, 1000, and 2000 mg/kg of the methanol extract via oral gavage for 28 days. Acute toxicity assessment revealed that the LD50 of both extracts exceeded 5000 mg/kg, as no mortality was observed at this dose, except for a reduction in normal activity in animals administered 5000 mg/kg. Administration of 250, 500, and 1000 mg/kg of both extracts showed no significant effect on the evaluated parameters compared to the control group. However, adose of 2000 mg/kg of both aqueous and methanol extracts significantly (p
