ANTIBIOTICS SUSCEPTIBILITY PROFILE OF BACTERIA OBTAINED FROM DRINKING WATER SOURCES IN OBUDU
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The health of individuals and communities are greatly influenced by the quality of water supplied on both developing and underdeveloped countries and has a profound effect on human health. The research study aims to determine and highlights Microbial load and their antibiotics susceptibility profiles of bacteria isolates from dug well, streams, boreholes, and other drinking water sources, from a distinct areas of Obudu metropolis, cross river state, Nigeria,. From September to November 2023, several drinking water Samples were examined for Microbial load in different areas of Obudu local government area. All models were collected aseptically from dug wells, streams, water, boreholes, and spring water into sterile 50ml container and transported inside a bucket filled with ice back and were transferred to the Microbiology laboratory that same day to avoid contamination. The spread plate method was used to culture all of the samples after a consecutive serial dilution. And the Kirby-Bauer single discs diffusion technique was utilized with clinical and laboratory standards institute (CLSI) to determine susceptibility patterns. Percentage of isolates were Serratia Spp, salmonella Spp, Escherichia coli, citrobacter Spp, Enterobacter spp, and Pseudomonas spp Among 36 different potassium hydrochloride (KOH) Gram-negative isolated bacteria species respectively. Most isolates were sensitive to Septrin, Amoxicillin, Augmentin, Tarivid, Ciprofloxacin, Gentamycin, and Sparfloxacin while resistive to Perfloxacin, and Streptomycin, were high. The isolated pathogenic microorganisms indicates sufficient Microbial load in drinking water and alarming for public health regulatory bodies. The prevalence of multiple-drugs resistant isolates, such as Pseudomonas spp, Salmonella Spp, Enterobacter Spp Serratia Spp Citrobacter Spp and Escherichia coli, are a mojor source of concerned due to the risk of infection and the propagation of resistant genes which restrict the number of chemotherapeutic drugs currently accessible when infected with any.
