Abstract

ABSTRACT Unemployment remains one of the most persistent socio-economic challenges confronting developing economies, particularly in Nigeria. This study investigates the relationship between unemployment and socio-economic backwardness in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area of Abia State. The research adopts a descriptive survey design, utilizing both primary and secondary data sources. Structured questionnaires were administered to residents, including youths, traders, and civil servants, to assess the causes, effects, and potential solutions to unemployment in the area. Findings reveal that unemployment significantly contributes to poverty, crime, low productivity, and poor standards of living in Isiala Ngwa North. Factors such as inadequate industrialization, poor educational systems, lack of government intervention, and limited access to capital were identified as key drivers of unemployment. The study further establishes that socio-economic backwardness in the area manifests through poor infrastructure, low income levels, and reduced economic activities. The study concludes that addressing unemployment is critical to reversing socio-economic backwardness. It recommends policies that promote skill acquisition, entrepreneurship development, infrastructural investment, and effective governance. These measures, if properly implemented, can enhance economic growth and improve living standards in the region.
