Abstract

This study examined the impact of citizen journalism on conventional journalism practice in Maiduguri, Borno State. The emergence of digital technologies and social media platforms has transformed news production and dissemination, enabling ordinary citizens to participate actively in news gathering and reporting. This development has significantly influenced traditional journalism practices, particularly in areas of speed, competition, credibility, and professional standards. The study adopted a survey research design. Data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to journalists working in selected conventional media organizations in Maiduguri. A total of 100 respondents were sampled using purposive sampling techniques. The data collected were analyzed using simple percentages and frequency distribution tables. Findings revealed that citizen journalism has a significant impact on conventional journalism practice. While it enhances speed in news dissemination and increases public participation in information sharing, it also poses challenges such as the spread of misinformation, reduced gatekeeping control, and increased pressure on professional journalists to publish quickly. The study further revealed that although citizen journalism complements traditional journalism, issues of credibility, verification, and ethical standards remain major concerns. The study concluded that citizen journalism is both a challenge and an opportunity for conventional journalism practice. It recommended that media organizations in Maiduguri should adopt improved verification mechanisms, integrate digital tools effectively, provide continuous training for journalists, and develop strategies to coexist productively with citizen journalists while upholding professional standards.
