Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the psychosocial impacts of street hawking among teenage girls in Bauchi metropolis. Street hawking is a prevalent economic activity in many Nigerian cities, where young girls often engage in selling goods on the streets to support their families. This research aims to delve into the psychological and social consequences of this practice on teenage girls, focusing on their mental health, educational attainment, and social relationships. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive data. Surveys will be administered to a sample of teenage hawkers to assess their mental health status, educational experiences, and social interactions. In-depth interviews with selected participants, their families, and community members will provide deeper insights into the personal and communal impacts of street hawking. Preliminary findings suggest that street hawking exposes teenage girls to various risks, including physical danger, psychological stress, and social stigma. These experiences can lead to adverse outcomes such as anxiety, depression, and disrupted education. Keyword: psychological impact, street hawking, teenage girls, Bauchi metropolis.
