The core research questions addressed in this study include: what specific actions has the United Nations taken to mediate and resolve the conflicts between Russia and Ukraine? What are the key political, economic, and social factors that have contributed to the emergence of the Russia Ukraine crisis? What diplomatic measures or strategies could be implemented to effectively resolve the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine? This work is focused on the role of United Nations and conflict resolution, a case study of Russia Ukraine crisis from the year 2022 to 2025. The study utilised two theories namely Realism theory and Liberal Institutionalism theory, liberal institutionalism theory was adopted. The study adopted a qualitative research design using content analysis of United Nations resolutions, press releases, legal documents, scholarly works, and reports from humanitarian agencies. The method of data collection was mainly secondary method. The findings revealed that while the United Nations played a significant normative and humanitarian role during the conflict, its overall impact on enforcing peace was limited due to institutional constraints especially the veteran power exercised by Russia. Nevertheless the United Nations contributed substantially through humanitarian relief, norm-setting, and support for diplomatic negotiations such as the Black Sea Grain Initiative. The study concluded that although the United Nations could not compel a cessation of hostilities, it remains a critical platform for moral leadership, humanitarian coordination, and international legal advocacy. Sequel to these findings, it was recommended that reforms should be made to enhance the United Nations effectiveness, particularly in strengthening general assembly follow up actions, expanding partnerships with regional actors and reviewing security council procedures. Finally, the United Nations capacity to manage high intensity conflicts involving powerful states must be re-evaluated to ensure its remains relevant in the evolving global order.
