EVALUATING HOW WELL QUALITY CONTROL IS APPLIED IN PROJECTS: A CASE STUDY OF PROJECTS IN JOS, PLATEAU STATE
Abstract
This study investigates the quality control measures applied in projects across various professional disciplines in the construction industry, including engineers, architects, builders, project managers, contractors, quantity surveyors, and site supervisors. Using a survey research design, data were collected from 126 respondents, of whom 115 returned questionnaires, yielding a 91.3% response rate. Statistical quality control tools such as the Mean Chart (X̄-chart) and Range Chart (R-chart) were used for data analysis. The results revealed that while most professional groups operated within statistically controlled limits, the engineering category exceeded the Upper Control Limit (UCL), indicating irregularities caused by factors such as inadequate supervision, pressure to meet deadlines, and non-compliance with standard quality procedures. However, the range analysis showed that process variability across all professions remained within control limits, suggesting stability and predictability in quality performance. The study also identified financial constraints, procurement corruption, limited testing facilities, and insufficient technical expertise as significant impediments to effective quality control. It concluded that quality control practices positively influence project performance, improving safety, client satisfaction, and structural reliability. The study recommended stronger enforcement of standards, regular professional training, improved funding for testing and supervision, and enhanced transparency in procurement and documentation processes.
