Abstract

The study was carried out to assess the Impact of Rainfall Variability on Maize Production in Maiduguri, Borno State. Four (4) Objective and four (4) research questions were used to guide the study. A descriptive research design was adopted in the study. The total sample population of Two hundred (400) was used. A structured questionnaire was used to collect the data from the respondents. The research used 59 items questionnaire for data collection, the questionnaire was divided into (5) section the data collected were analyzed using single percentages, results show that Respondents are mostly experienced, active-age farmers, with moderate education levels. Farming is small-scale and highly dependent on rainfall. Farmers perceive rainfall as increasingly unpredictable. Variability causes severe yield reduction, crop failures, income losses, and food insecurity. Adaptation strategies are mainly traditional, low-cost, and Institutional support is inadequate. Limiting resilience climatic changes like low rainfall variability, crop yield production and drought tolerance crop. However majority of the farmers are male and more than 50%of the farmers have experience of maize production system in Maiduguri. Lastly, the researcher recommended that government and Policymakers (State and Federal):Prioritize Climate-Smart Agricultural (CSA) Policies: Mainstream CSA into all agricultural development plans for Borno State. This should involve. Investment in Irrigation Infrastructure: Move beyond rain-fed dependence by subsidizing and promoting small-scale irrigation technologies, such as low-cost drip irrigation kits and motorized pumps for shallow aquifers. This was the most frequently requested need from farmers and is a cornerstone of adaptation in semi-arid regions (World Bank, 2020). Input Support Systems: Establish transparent and accessible subsidy programs that specifically target and deliver drought-tolerant, early-maturing maize seeds and appropriate fertilizers to genuine smallholder farmers before the planting season.
