IMPLICATIONS OF ON-LINE NEWSPAPER READERSHIP ON THE NEWSPAPER INDUSTRY IN NIGERIA: A STUDY OF READERSHIP OF THIS DAY AND THE GUARDIAN
Abstract
The study investigates the effects of on-line newspaper readership on the newspaper
purchase among audience in Nigeria. The study is guided by Technological
Determinism Theory, and Use and Gratification Theory. The methodology used for
carrying out the study is survey design. Two sets of questionnaire are administered;
one on the reading public and the other on the management of selected newspapers.
The research results reveal that sales of surveyed newspaper companies reduced
drastically over the period of study, and that respondents are more interested in
reading newspapers on-line than off-line. The study recommends that newspaper
industry should jointly come up with a standardized subscription fee for access to
their on-line editions. It also recommends that contents of newspaper hard copies
should be improved to enhance timeliness and immediacy, so as to pace up with on
line news trends.
