EFFECT OF ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS ON THE PERFORMANCE OF SMALL BUSINESS ENTERPRISES
Abstract
This study investigates the effect of environmental factors on the performance of small
business enterprises in Lagos Island, Lagos State, Nigeria. With the increasing
significance of small businesses as engines of economic growth and employment,
understanding the external influences that impact their operations is crucial. The
research focuses on selected small businesses within Lagos Island, aiming to identify the
key environmental factors—such as economic conditions, regulatory frameworks,
infrastructural availability, and social dynamics—that influence their performance.
Using a research design approach, data was collected through surveys and interviews
with business owners, complemented by secondary data analysis. The quantitative aspect
involved statistical analysis to establish correlations between identified environmental
factors and various performance metrics, including revenue growth, customer
satisfaction, and market expansion. The qualitative component provided deeper insights
into how these environmental factors are perceived by business operators and their
adaptive strategies. The findings reveal that government policies significantly influence
the operations of small-scale enterprises, the contrasts with expectations that government
policies play a critical role in influencing small business performance, depending on
their nature and implementation. Infrastructural issues, particularly access to reliable
power supply and transportation networks, emerged as critical determinants of business
efficiency and growth. This study contributes to the existing literature by highlighting the
interplay between environmental factors and small business performance in the Nigerian
context, offering implications for policymakers and stakeholders. Recommendations
include improving regulatory frameworks to support small businesses, enhancing
infrastructure, and creating supportive economic policies that foster a conducive
business environment. The findings aim to inform strategies that can lead to sustainable
growth and development for small enterprises in Lagos and similar urban settings in
Nigeria.
