Abstract

This study examines the impact of entrepreneurial skills on the performance of small-scale businesses (SSBs) in Abeokuta, Nigeria. Using a survey design, data were collected from 50 owners of small businesses across various sectors including manufacturing, services, retail, and distribution. The study investigates three main objectives: the impact of entrepreneurial skills on business performance, the relationship between entrepreneurial skills and business outcomes, and the improvement needs of entrepreneurs regarding management skills. The findings reveal that strong entrepreneurial skills, particularly in innovation, financial literacy, and decision-making, significantly contribute to business success. Entrepreneurs with these competencies tend to introduce innovative products and manage resources efficiently, leading to increased profitability and sustainability. However, gaps in financial management and risk assessment were identified, limiting the growth potential for some businesses. The study recommends targeted training programs to enhance key entrepreneurial skills and foster a culture of continuous learning to improve the performance and sustainability of small-scale businesses. These efforts are expected to contribute to local economic development and poverty reduction. Keywords: Entrepreneurial skills, small-scale businesses, management, financial literacy, innovation, risk management, Ibadan North.
