DEMOCRACY AND GOOD GOVERNANCE IN NIGERIA, CHALLENGES AND PROSPECT (A CASE STUDY OF NIGERIA 4TH REPUBLIC 1999 - 2007)
Abstract
This study examines the relationship between democracy and good governance in Nigeria with particular focus on the Fourth Republic between 1999 and 2007. The return to democratic rule in 1999 marked a significant turning point in Nigeria’s political history after several years of military dictatorship. However, despite the restoration of democratic institutions, the country continued to face numerous challenges that hinder the realization of good governance. The study investigates the extent to which democratic governance has contributed to political stability, accountability, transparency, and socio-economic development in Nigeria.
The research adopts a descriptive and analytical approach, relying mainly on secondary sources such as textbooks, journals, conference papers, and other relevant publications. The study explores the concepts of democracy, democratization, and good governance, and examines the challenges affecting their effective practice in Nigeria. Among the major issues identified are corruption, weak institutional frameworks, poor leadership, lack of accountability, electoral malpractice, insecurity, and inadequate respect for the rule of law.
Findings from the study reveal that although democratic governance has created opportunities for political participation and institutional development, the expected benefits of democracy have not been fully realized due to persistent governance challenges. The study concludes that the consolidation of democracy in Nigeria requires strong institutions, responsible leadership, adherence to the rule of law, and active citizen participation in governance.
The study therefore recommends institutional reforms, strengthened accountability mechanisms, improved electoral processes, and effective anti-corruption strategies as essential steps toward achieving sustainable democracy and good governance in Nigeria.
