Abstract

This study investigates the role of digital technology in enhancing cooperative management and operations in Nigeria. Using a sample of 50 respondents drawn from various cooperatives, the research aims to assess the current level of digital technology adoption, the impact of such technologies on operational efficiency, the barriers to adoption, and potential strategies to foster adoption. The study employs a mixed-method approach, including descriptive statistics and regression analysis, to explore the relationship between digital technology adoption and key factors such as infrastructure, digital literacy, and financial constraints. The findings reveal that while digital technology adoption has improved operational efficiency in cooperatives—particularly in urban areas—several barriers, including poor infrastructure and financial constraints, hinder wider adoption, especially in rural cooperatives. The regression results indicate that infrastructure (p = 0.004, t = 3.15), digital literacy (p = 0.022, t = 2.31), and financial constraints (p = 0.001, t = 4.67) are significant determinants of digital technology adoption. Furthermore, the mean values for strategies such as improving digital infrastructure (4.44), fostering innovation (4.36), and providing financial support (4.38) underscore the importance of these measures. The study concludes that while digital technology can greatly enhance cooperative management and operations, overcoming infrastructural and financial challenges is essential for its widespread adoption. Recommendations include improving digital infrastructure, providing targeted training, fostering a culture of innovation, and offering financial incentives to cooperatives.
