MECHANICS OF PLAYWRITING IN SELECTED PLAYS OF AHMED YERIMA.
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The Mechanics of Playwriting is very topical and Playwriting is a creative writing
that portrays societal norms of the society. The way plays are crafted and churn out
to the public to study and stage is impressive following the constant innovations in
language usage and technology. However, a major challenge is that the desire to
study plays and even adapt them to the stage is not encouraging anymore. Studies
have shown that the various techniques that reknown playwrights adopt to write
their plays to stimulate the desire to study them may have been undermined. This
study examines The Mechanics of Playwriting in Selected Plays of Ahmed Yerima.
The study is based on qualitative research design using expost facto as its
methodology. The theoretical framework used is Reader Response theory. Findings
show that mechanics are the basic ground plan for evolving as style in playwriting.
An experience playwright evolves a personal technique to distinguish himself
among others. Mechanics are linguistics elements that intensive study can enhance.
It concludes that playwriting should be revitalized through research and insigtht in
history and language, and that Yerima‘s form is a benchmark for others to follow.
It recommends that mechanics should be reassessed in the Department of
Performing Arts and also up-coming playwrights should study wider to help them
grasp what other discipline may hold to enhance their profession. Without a good
linguistic plug, ideas may not be properly put down.
