Abstract

ABSTRACT This study titled “Statistical Analysis on Menstruation Hygiene among Female Students in Federal Polytechnic Bauchi Female Hostel” was conducted to examine the level of knowledge, practices, and associated factors influencing menstrual hygiene among female students residing in the hostel. The objectives of the study were to identify the side effects of poor menstrual hygiene and to promote proper menstrual hygiene practices among female students. A total of 84 questionnaires were distributed, out of which 81 were returned, giving a high response rate of 96.43%. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and logistic regression techniques. The demographic analysis revealed that the majority of respondents were young, with 45.68% aged between 21–25 years, and most were students (79.01%) with OND qualifications (58.02%). The findings showed that while respondents generally demonstrated some awareness of menstrual hygiene, there were inconsistencies and misconceptions in their knowledge and practices. The logistic regression analysis indicated that none of the selected variables significantly predicted menstrual knowledge and awareness, as all p-values were greater than 0.05. Many variables displayed extremely large coefficients and standard errors, along with very wide confidence intervals, pointing to issues such as small sample size or lack of variability in responses. For example, variables relating to handwashing, changing menstrual products regularly, proper disposal methods, and use of menstrual cups did not show significant effects. Withthe absence of statistically significant predictors, the descriptive findings highlight a general understanding of menstrual hygiene among the students. However, gaps in knowledge and some incorrect practices still exist, indicating the need for intensified health education campaigns. The study concludes that menstrual hygiene knowledge among female students is present but uneven, and not strongly influenced by any single demographic or behavioral factor. It recommends strengthening menstrual health education through school curricula, health campaigns, and provision of sanitary facilities in hostels to encourage proper practices. These interventions are essential to prevent health risks such as infections and to promote the overall well-being of female students.
