ASSESSMENT OF THE CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF JUVENILE DELINQUENCY AMONG PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPILS IN BAUCHI METROPOLIS
Abstract
This study examine the causes and effects of juvenile delinquency among primary school pupils in Bauchi Metropolis, Nigeria. The research was motivated by the growing concern that delinquent behaviours among children disrupt both academic achievement and social development. A survey research design was employed, and data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to a sample of 150 respondents, consisting of pupils, teachers, and parents or guardians. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies and percentages, and the results were presented in tabular form. The findings revealed that poverty, lack of parental supervision, peer group influence, broken homes, and media exposure were the major causes of juvenile delinquency. The study further established that delinquent behaviour leads to poor academic performance, school dropout, early involvement in crime, disrespect for authority, and social stigma. The study suggested several strategies including closer parental monitoring, poverty alleviation initiatives, stronger school discipline, moral and religious education, and active community involvement. The study concluded that juvenile delinquency in Bauchi Metropolis is driven by a combination of socio-economic, familial, and institutional factors, but can be effectively addressed through multi-stakeholder interventions.
