ROLE OF WHATSAPP IN PROMOTING PEACE IN JOS, NIGERIA: A STUDY OF JOS CONNECT
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study explores the role of WhatsApp in promoting multiculturalism in Northern Nigeria, with a specific focus on the Jos Connect platform in Plateau State. The research investigates the potential of digital communication tools to foster intercultural dialogue, enhance cultural awareness, and reduce prejudices. Utilizing a qualitative research design, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 purposively selected participants from the Jos Connect WhatsApp group. Thematic analysis of the data revealed that WhatsApp significantly facilitates real-time, informal intercultural dialogue, serving as a "digital town hall" that bridges ethnic divides. The platform enhances cultural awareness and appreciation through the sharing of artifacts and personal narratives, effectively humanizing different ethnic and religious groups. Findings indicate a moderate effectiveness in reducing ethnic and religious prejudices through sustained interaction and empathy-building exchanges, positively shifting users' perceptions of cultural diversity from a source of conflict to a collective strength. However, significant challenges were identified, including the spread of misinformation, digital and socio-economic divides, and moderation overload, which can hinder its peacebuilding potential.
