Abstract

Polyherbal recipe, the mixture of highly used three medicinal plants Citrullus colocynthis, Curculigo pilosa, and Gladiolus pssitacinus, is very important in folkloric medicine. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of oral administration of polyherbal extracts: Citrullus colocynthis, Curculigo pilosa, and Gladiolus pssitacinus on lipid profile and kidney function of normal Wistar rats. The polyherbal extract was administered at doses of 50, 100, 200 and 500 mg/kg body weight for 4 weeks. The cholesterol and triglyceride were assayed for lipid profile while urea and creatinine were assayed for kidney function using standard methods. Oral administration of the polyherbal extract significantly decreased cholesterol and triglycerides levels in a dose-dependent manner. The results also show that both urea and creatinine levels were decreased in treated rats in comparison to the control. It can be concluded that polyherbal extract medical potential which can be considered as a basis for further pharmacological evaluation.
