DETERMINATION OF SOME HEAVY METALS IN IRISH POTATO FROM MAIDUGURI METROPOLITAN COUNCIL, BORNO STATE, NIGERIA.
Abstract
Heavy metals are considered among the most important environmental concerns due to their toxicity and accumulation in the body. This study was conducted using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (A.A.S), sample were prepared using standard procedure. The concentration of arsenic (0.013mg/kg), cadmium (0.025mg/kg), lead (0.014mg/kg), chromium (0.012cmg/kg), nickel (0.08 mg/kg), magnesium (0.204mg/kg), cobalt (0.064mg/kg), copper (0.016mg/kg), zinc (0.004mg/kg), and iron (0.015mg/kg). The result obtained shows that Magnesium (Mg) has the highest concentration with a value of (0.204mg/kg) while Zinc (Zn) Shows the lowest concentration with the value (0.004 mg/kg). From the result obtained the concentration of all metals studied are below WHO standard limits.
