BACTERIOLOGICAL EXAMINATION OF SOME COMMERCIAL PREPARED ZOBO MARKETED IN ENUGU METROPOLIS
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to determine the bacteriological quality of zobo drink
marketed within Enugu metropolis. The zobo drink was prepared and evaluated
using standard microbiological techniques. The pour plate technique was employed
for isolation, from the result observed, the sample analyzed there was no bacteria
growth on the bacteria media (Nutrient agar and MacConkey Agar) used. The
bacteria isolated were identified based on cultural, morphological, Gram reaction
and biochemical characteristics. These bacteria include Staphylococcus aureus,
and Escherichia coli. The presence of Escherichia coli indicates Faecal
contamination while Staphycococcus aureus and indicated poor and unhygienic
handling of the beverage. Therefore, the result revealed that the samples of zobo
drink were directly and indirectly contaminated with high levels of pathogenic
microorganisms. The present findings revealed that zobo drinks retailed and sold in
these market are potential vehicles for transmitting food borne illness, thus the
need to develop good manufacturing process (GMP) and post production
preservation and packing techniques.
