ASSESSMENT OF SOCIO-CULTURAL FACTORS ON VOTING BEHAVIOR IN KWAYA KUSAR LOCAL GOVERNMENT, BORNO STATE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Voting behavior is a fundamental aspect of democratic governance, reflecting how citizens make electoral choices. In Nigeria, socio-cultural factors such as ethnicity, religion, kinship networks, family background, and community influence often shape these choices, particularly in rural areas. This study investigates the influence of socio-cultural factors on voting behavior in Kwaya Kusar Local Government Area (LGA) of Borno State. Using both qualitative and quantitative research methods, data were collected from eligible voters aged 18 years and above through structured questionnaires and interviews. The study examines how religion, ethnicity, and kinship networks impact voters’ decisions, and evaluates the extent to which these influences affect democratic participation and electoral outcomes. Findings reveal that socio-cultural dynamics significantly shape voting patterns, often outweighing policy-driven considerations, and contribute to challenges in achieving informed and issue-based voting. The study highlights the need for targeted voter education programs and strategies to promote rational electoral decision-making. By providing insights into the socio-cultural determinants of voting in Kwaya Kusar LGA, this research contributes to strengthening democratic consolidation, fostering political accountability, and enhancing inclusive participation in rural communities.
