Abstract

This study investigates “Effect of instructional materials on English Teaching and Learning in Junior Secondary Schools in Delta North Senatorial District”. The study examined the availability and usage of instructional materials, their impact on students’ understanding and academic performance, and the challenges faced by teachers in implementing them. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, involving 150 respondents (students and teachers) selected through stratified random sampling. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using frequency counts and percentages. The findings revealed that while basic materials like textbooks are widely available, modern and interactive materials such as videos, realia, and multimedia tools are lacking. The study also found a significant relationship between the availability and use of instructional materials and students’ engagement and academic performance. Based on the results, the study recommends increased funding, regular teacher training, and provision of varied instructional materials to improve English Language instruction. The research contributes to understanding how instructional support influences language learning and calls for strategic intervention in junior secondary education across Delta North.
