THE IMPACT OF OBIARUKU MARKET ON INTERGROUP RELATIONS, 1960- 2010
Abstract
This study explores the impact of local markets on intergroup relations, with specific focus on Obiaruku Market in the Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria. The research was motivated by the noticeable lack of scholarly attention given to the role of the Obiaruku Market in shaping intergroup relations, despite its strategic location and diverse cosmopolitan character. The objectives of the study include examining the socio-political significance of Obiaruku market in Ukwuani Local Government, particularly how the market evolved from colonial-era trade centers into community-driven hub of commerce and interaction. The study highlights how these transformations have influenced the people of Obiaruku and surrounding communities, fostering economic, social, cultural, and political ties across group boundaries.
