Abstract

ABSTRACT Soil is a construction material in various civil engineering projects, and it supports structural foundations. It is very important to predict the stress and strain imposed to a given point in a soil mass due to certain loading conditions. The aim of this project is to examine the correlation between laboratory dynamic cone penetrations and California Bearing ratio of soil in Ekiti central senatorial district. Ekiti state is a state in southwest Nigeria, created on October 1st, 1996 alongside five other new states by military dictator General Sani Abacha. The state, created out of territory of Ondo State, covered the former twelve local government areas that made up the Ekiti zone of old Ondo State; however, on creation, it took off with sixteen (16) local government areas (LGAs), having had an additional four carved out of the old ones. test was carried out in accordance with BS 1377 (1990) using the method of sieve washing. 300g of laterite soil was weighed and placed in a dry clean plate. The dried soil sample was then soaked with enough water and allowed to stay for 24 hours. The soil was then washed through an arrangement of two sieves (2mm aperture size up and 75µm BS aperture size down) until the water passing through 75µm BS sieve became clear. The findings revealed that the specific gravity of the soil of the study area is varied from the range of 2.14 to 2.77. In conclusion, The correlation between laboratory dynamic cone penetration test (DCPT) and the California Bearing Ratio (CBR) of soil in Ekiti Central Senatorial District reveals significant insight into the engineering properties of local soil. Based on recommendation, it is recommended that the Dynamic Cone Penetration (DCP) test be adopted as a preliminary soil investigation method due to its speed and cost-effectiveness compared to the California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test.
