Abstract

This study explores the implications of Italy’s links in Edo State Human Trafficking Crisis It does this by exploring the Edo State Human Trafficking Crisis, it Links to Italy and the implication that proceed from that. Of note is that fact that Edo State, Nigeria, is a major source region for trafficked persons in Europe, particularly men, women and youth. Italy, often called “the Boot,” has emerged as the primary destination. The research explores how Italy’s migration policies and role in transnational trafficking networks contribute to the persistence of the crisis. It also assesses the impact of this illicit migration on Italy’s economy, society, and national security. The study focuses on three key areas: the crisis, link and implications on Italy. While the push factors in Nigeria includes, poverty, unemployment, and weak economy are acknowledged, the analysis centers on how these interact with Italian systems. Research reveal rising public anxiety, tighter immigration controls, and mounting pressure on Italy’s public institutions.A qualitative method was used, that is descriptive in design, drawing from secondary sources including academic literature, institutional reports, media publications, and policy documents from 2016 to 2020. The study is grounded in one theoretical framework which is the Push-Pull Theory. This help explain the motivations behind migration and how structural weaknesses in both countries sustain trafficking. The study shows that traffickers use deception, spiritual coercion, and economic promises to lure victims. These networks are highly organized and operate across borders with the help of legal loopholes and institutional gaps. On the Italian side, the steady flow of trafficked persons has sparked social tensions and exposed flaws in immigration and asylum systems. The study concludes that Italy cannot address the crisis alone. Solutions require stronger cooperation with Nigeria, better legal enforcement, and preventive efforts that address root causes in source communities. Policy recommendations call for improved victim support, tighter regulation of trafficking rings, and long-term economic strategies in Edo State.
