ROLE OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT ON ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF RURAL AREA: A CASE STUDY OF KAGA LOCAL GOVERNMENT, BORNO STATE
Abstract
The primary purpose of this study was to assess the role of local governments in the
economic development of Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State. The study adopted a
quantitative research approach, utilizing a survey research design. From a target population of
1,200 individuals, a sample size of 343 respondents was drawn using the Taro Yamane
formula and selected via the simple random sampling method. Data was collected through
structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequencies and
percentages), while the formulated hypotheses were tested using the Chi-Square statistical
tool.
The findings revealed that local governments play a significant role in rural development,
specifically making positive contributions to infrastructure development such as roads, water
supply, and health facilities. However, the study identified major challenges hindering local
government performance, including limited funding, a lack of skilled personnel, corruption,
and bureaucratic red tape. Based on these findings, the study recommends that the local
government should increase funding allocations for rural development projects, streamline
bureaucratic processes to minimize delays, and enhance comprehensive training programs for
its personnel to improve their competencies.
