Abstract

This study investigated the effect of training and development on workers’ commitment in the banking industry, with a focus on selected commercial banks in Nigeria. The primary aim was to examine the extent to which employee engagement, training, and development influence organizational commitment. The study adopted a survey research design, and data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to 69 respondents. Descriptive statistics and chi-square tests were used to analyze the data. The findings revealed that employee engagement significantly influences affective commitment, while training enhances employee performance, loyalty, and retention. Additionally, career development initiatives were found to strengthen both normative and continuance commitment among bank employees. The results support the rejection of the null hypotheses, indicating a statistically significant relationship between training and development practices and employee commitment. The study concludes that well-structured and consistently implemented training and development programs foster higher levels of commitment among banking personnel. It recommends that management intensify employee-focused HR practices such as participatory decision-making, continuous skills development, and career advancement opportunities. These strategies are essential for maintaining a motivated and loyal workforce in a highly competitive financial sector. The study contributes to the body of knowledge by providing empirical insights into how training and development drive organizational commitment in Nigeria’s banking industry.
