Abstract

Introduction: The vulnerability to SARS-COV-2 infection among Healthcare workers (HCWs) is high as a result of their clinical role in the provision of healthcare services. The transmission of the disease among HCWs is exaggerated by overcrowding, absence of isolation facilities, contaminated environment and is likely enhanced by insufficient knowledge and awareness of infection transmission and prevention control among HCWs. Objective: This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude and perception of healthcare workers on transmission and prevention of COVID-19 in Federal Medical Centre Owo. Methods: The study employed a descriptive cross-sectional research design. A purposive sampling technique was used to select a sample size of 292 healthcare workers from the target population. A set of questionnaires was used to collect data. Descriptive and inferential statistic were used in analysing data and the result were presented in frequency tables and charts. Results: The result yielded a 95.9% return rate. The highest (32.5%) age category of healthcare worker was 40-49 years with a mean age of 40.62 ± 10.74 years. Vast majority (79.6%) of healthcare workers had high level of knowledge regarding transmission and prevention of COVID-19; more than two- third (70.7%) of them had positive attitude towards transmission and prevention of Covid-19; and most (71.8%) of them had good perception of transmission and prevention of Covid-19. Knowledge of transmission and prevention of Covid-19 was significantly related with attitude and perception of transmission and prevention of Covid-19 among healthcare workers (p≤ 0.05). Conclusion: Larger proportion of healthcare workers in the study setting had high level of knowledge; positive attitude and good perception regarding the transmission and prevention of Covid-19 infection. Recommendation: There is need for continuous public health education of healthcare workers on Covid-19 control and prevention. Keywords: Healthcare workers, Knowledge, Attitude, Perception, Covid-19
