THE EFFECT OF SELF MANAGEMENT EDUCATION ON POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER (PTSD) AMONG BEREAVED STUDENTS IN JOSEPH AYO BABALOLA
Abstract
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that's triggered by a terrifying
event either experiencing it or witnessing it. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares and
severe anxiety, as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event. This used descriptive design to
assess the effect of self-management education on post-traumatic stress disorder among bereaved
students in JABU. Snow ball sampling technique was used to recruit 53 respondents. Questionnaire
was used as the instrument of data collection. The responses were analyzed with descriptive
statistics (frequency and tables) and influential statistics of chi-square to test the hypothesis. The
findings showed that majority 40(75.5%) have experience posttraumatic stress disorder since they
lost their loved ones, while 13(24.5%) said they have not. Majority 50(94.3%) said they experience
sleeplessness, while 3(5.7%) did not. Majority 40(75.5%) aid they do not avoid classes, while
13(24.5%) said they do. Majority 30(56.6%) said they neglect social activities, while 23(43.4%)
said they don’t. Hypotheses were set and tested using chi-square at 0.05 level of significance, there
is a significant association between the level of knowledge on self-management education and the
effect of self-management on PTSD among the bereaved student of JABU, Since the P-Value (0.00)
is lesser than 0.05 level of significance, we reject the null hypothesis and accept the alternative
hypothesis. (P=.00, X2 Cal=2.126a).The findings revealed that although 62.3% of respondents
know something about self-management at the baseline data, after educating them for 5 weeks it
was seen that 95% of the respondents now have Knowledge on the self-management techniques,
90% have practiced any self-management technique, while 85% have share the self-management
techniques they learnt with others who have experience bereavement after educating them.it is
therefore required of academic institutions to offer supportive services tailored to both students
and professionals to help bereaved students.
