Abstract

Social media has become an important communication tool among young people worldwide. However, excessive use has raised concerns about addiction and its negative effects on youth development. This study investigates social media addiction among youths in Yelwa Community of Bauchi State. The research aims to identify the level of addiction, factors contributing to excessive usage, and its effects on academic performance, social interaction, and mental well-being. A survey research method was used, and questionnaires were distributed to selected youths in the community. The findings reveal that many youths spend several hours daily on social media platforms, which negatively affects their productivity, studies, and interpersonal relationships. The study concludes that while social media offers benefits, uncontrolled usage can lead to addiction and social problems. The research recommends awareness programs, parental monitoring, and responsible digital habits among youths.
