AN ASSESSMENT OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE NIGERIAN POLICE IN RELATION TO INCREASING CRIME IN IKA NORTH EAST, DELTA STATE
Abstract
This study assessed the effectiveness of the Nigerian Police in managing crime in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State .The study was delimited to four communities;Owaoyibu ,Owa- Alero ,Boji-Boji Owa ,and Idumuesah. A total of 400 respondents was selected through a multi-stage sampling technique involving purposive ,stratified and simple random sampling .Data were collected using a structured questionnaire ,key informant interviews ,focus group discussions. The questionnaire was validated by academic experts in research methods. Reliability was measured using Cronbach’s Alpha ,yielding a coefficient of 0.78,which is considered acceptable for social science research. The study was guided by five research questions and five hypotheses .Quantitative data were analyzed using the chi-square (x 2 ) statistical test at a 0.05 level of significance , while qualitative insights were used to support and deepen the interpretation of results. The study was anchored on Social Disorganization Theory, Routine Activity Theory ,and Procedural Justice Theory. These frameworks helped explain how weak community -police -trust contribute to crimes like cultism, kidnapping , armed robbery ,and cybercrime .Findings showed that 49.18 % of respondents expressed dissatisfaction with police performance ,while only 45.75% were satisfied .The mean score for perceived effectiveness was 2.96 on a 5-point Likert scale reflecting a slightly negative public perception. Similarly, police trust scored a mean of 2.96, with respondents holding unfavorable views. Additional findings revealed that delayed response, poor logistics, inadequate manpower, and weak institutional collaboration were key challenges. These gaps have led increased public reliance on vigilante groups and informal security structures. The study recommends community based policing strategies, improved officer training ,stronger inter agency collaboration to increase effectiveness and investment in surveillance technology .It concludes that strengthening trust ,accountability, and inter-agency collaboration is crucial for improving Police effectiveness.
