ETHNIC AND REGIONAL FACTORS AND THE DYNAMICS OF POLITICAL INSTABILITY IN NIGERIA
Abstract
This study assesses ethnic and regional factors and the dynamics of political instability in Nigeria. The study objectives are: to analyze the impact of ethnic and regional disparities on political instability in Nigeria; to assess the influence of ethnic and regional identities on electoral processes; and to identify the socio-economic consequences of ethnic and regional-driven political instability. Specifically, the study adopts descriptive method. This study is anchored on Group Theory. The data used in this research is largely from secondary sources such as textbooks, magazines, articles, and journals. Findings revealed that that the intricate interplay between ethnic and regional disparities has contributed to recurring conflicts and instability in Nigeria, affecting governance and national cohesion. Also, it was found that ethnic and regional identities significantly influence electoral processes in Nigeria, shaping voter behaviour, party dynamics, and campaign strategies. These influences contribute to political instability by fostering polarization, increasing the potential for violence, and distorting democratic processes. Finally, the study found that political instability fueled by ethnic and regional tensions often disrupts economic activities and development. The resulting instability leads to a volatile economic environment, deterring both domestic and foreign investments and impacting overall economic development. The study conclude that, fostering dialogue and cooperation among diverse ethnic groups can help build a more cohesive national identity. It was recommended among others that the government should prioritize infrastructural investments and economic incentives in underdeveloped regions to foster balanced growth and diminish the sources of regional discontent. Additionally, establishing mechanisms for fair and transparent allocation of federal resources will help in reducing regional inequalities and fostering a sense of inclusion among all ethnic groups.
