Abstract

The study evaluates the assessment of TikTok Addiction on Students' Academic Performance using a Study of Students of the University of Delta, Agbor. The Specific Objectives are to; determine the level of TikTok usage among students of the University of Delta, Agbor; examine the extent of TikTok addiction among the students; investigate the impact of TikTok addiction on students’ academic performance. This study was anchored on two theories; Cognitive Load Theory and Uses and Gratifications Theory. The research design that was used for this study is descriptive survey. The population of this study comprised of all the registered students of University of Delta, Agbor. Therefore, the total population of the study is 11,187. To arrive at the sample size of 386, Taro Yamane sample size determination formula was used. Therefore to administer the instrument to the respondents, purposive sampling technique was used. The instruments for data gathering were the questionnaire and interview guide. data were analysed with weighted mean scores from a four (4) point likert scale while data generated from the interview guide were qualitatively recorded using Yin’s explanation building technique. The findings revealed that TikTok is highly popular among students at the University of Delta, Agbor, with many reporting daily and prolonged engagement. Findings show strong signs of TikTok addiction among students, such as compulsive checking, anxiety without use, and failed attempts to reduce screen time. Based on the findings, the study concludes that TikTok usage is widespread among students of the University of Delta, Agbor, with many engaging with the platform on a daily basis for extended periods. This consistent and prolonged use has resulted in signs of addiction, including compulsive behaviour, restlessness without access, and difficulty controlling screen time. Based on the strength of the finding, the study recommended that students should be encouraged to regulate their daily screen time on TikTok to prevent excessive use and minimise distractions that interfere with academic responsibilities such as studying, attending lectures, and completing assignments. The study also recommended that the university should implement awareness programmes and digital wellness campaigns to educate students on the risks of social media addiction and its negative impact on academic performance and mental focus.
