PHYTOCHEMICALSCREENINGANDANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITYOFLEPTEDENIAHASTATA(PERS)DECNELEAVES
Abstract
This study investigates the phytochemical constituents, antimicrobial, and
antibacterial activity of Leptadenia hastata, a medicinal plant widely used in
traditional medicine for treating various infections. Fresh leaves of Leptadenia
hastata were collected, dried, and extracted using methanol as the solvent.
Phytochemical screening of the methanolic extract revealed the presence of alkaloids,
flavonoids, tannins, saponins, glycosides, and steroids, which are known to possess
biological and therapeutic properties. The antibacterial activity of the extract was
evaluated against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli using the agar well
diffusion method. The methanolic extract exhibited noticeable inhibitory effects
against both bacterial strains, with a stronger effect observed on Staphylococcus
aureus. Although only bacterial strains were tested in this study, the presence of
diverse phytochemicals suggests that Leptadenia hastata may possess broader
antimicrobial potential against other microorganisms. These findings support the
traditional use of Leptadenia hastata in the treatment of microbial infections and
highlight its potential as a natural source of antimicrobial compounds
