DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A DEEP LEARNING MODEL FOR EARLY CROP DISEASE DETECTION
Abstract
CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the study
Agriculture is fundamental in food security and economic growth in all countries but plant diseases are a major threat to crop yield and quality. Historically, farmers conducted inspections to identify diseases, which are inefficient, laborious, and subject to mistakes. Plant disease continue to threaten crop production leading to significant losses, food shortages, and reduced agricultural productivity. According to the Food and agriculture organization, plant diseases make up to 40 percent of annual losses globally impacting food chains and small scale farmers (FAO, 2021). These impediments reveal the importance of an automated and accurate system that can aid in early effort so that plant diseases can be attended to promptly. Early detection of these diseases is crucial to curb these losses and enhance agricultural growth
Thanks to progress in deep learning and computer vision, intelligent systems have been created that can identify plant diseases with great precision. Furthermore, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), which is a deep learning algorithm, are exceptionally powerful for image classification which makes it easier to recognize diseases from specific images of leaves (LeCun et al., 2015). This progress has enabled agriculture to utilize artificial intelligence for better predicting diseases and monitoring the health of crops.
This project is about the design of a Plant Disease Prediction System based on deep learning and Streamlit - a Python port framework for developing interactive web applications. Users have access to a simplified and user-friendly website where they can upload images of plant leaves. The trained model analyzes and classifies diseases from the images uploaded. The goal of the system is to assist farmers, researchers, and
agricultural professionals in making informed decisions to avert crop failures by employing a deep learning method for disease detection.Such a system can improve agricultural decision-making by timely evaluation of plants for accuracy in their health assessment, which can help minimize the use of chemicals to some extent thereby improving food safety.
This system has been developed to promote sustainable agriculture by providing a timely mechanism for managing plant diseases. Through Artificial Intelligence and an easy-to-use web interface, this project showcases a practical application of technology to solve real life problems.
1.2 Problem statement
In numerous rural, resource-limited situations, smallholders often are not able to recognize the early symptoms of plant diseases, which causes delays in diagnosis and a consequent reduction in yields. With such settings, disease-related reductions often exceed 20% every year; on a global scale, it is estimated that at least 25% of crop loss is due to pest and diseases (Oerke, 2020). These farmers frequently resort to generalized pesticide use, which poses health hazards, damages the environment, and fastens pest resistance, while an expert may have provided correct advice (Mrema et al., 2022).
AI-based solutions, including mobile apps, drones, and machine learning models, are being developed to further foster early disease detection and targeted interventions, yet serious barriers exist in their implementation for the smallholder farmers. Low infrastructure, low digital literacy, and poor internet connectivity limit implementation (Kamilaris & Prenafeta-Boldú, 2018). Surmounting these limitations is a must if crop health monitoring in underserved agricultural communities is to become sustainable, inclusive, and effective.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study
The aim of this project is to develop a plant disease predictor based on images of various plant leaves and to teach users about the given plant diseases.
Specific Objectives:
i. To understand the nature of crop diseases and their causes
ii. To design a crop disease detection system that allows users to upload plant images and provide a diagnosis on plant health based on image provided.
iii. To implement the designed system
iv. To test and evaluate the performance of the system
1.4 Methodology
The methods used to achieve the stated objectives are:
i. The understanding of crop diseases, causes, and the impact on farm lands was achieved through the review of literature and case studies.
ii. The system design was carried out using flowcharts and UML tools
iii. The system was developed using python programming language (with support libraries for CNN for pattern recognition), along with Streamlit for the interface.
iv. The system was tested by multiple users and performance evaluation was measured using metrics like accuracy, precision, and recall.
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study leverages a deep learning-based algorithm to help agricultural professionals and farmers understand plant health better and to enhance effective management, improve crop care, as well as improved agricultural practices by detecting plant diseases early. By integrating image recognition for plant disease detection, the system will help farmers take procreative steps to ensure better agricultural outcomes.
