DEVELOPMENT OF AN ANDROID-BASED PERSONAL FINANCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Abstract
Managing personal finances is a vital part of everyday life, especially for students and individuals with limited income. Many people struggle to track their spending, save money, and plan their finances due to a lack of simple and affordable tools. This project focuses on the design and development of an Android-based Personal Finance Management System (PFMS) that helps users monitor their income and expenses, set financial goals, and make better budgeting decisions. The system was developed using React Native with Expo, and it stores data locally using AsyncStorage, ensuring offline access and usability without internet connection. The application allows users to record daily transactions, categorize them (e.g., food, transport, bills), set savings targets, and receive reminders for financial obligations. It also generates visual reports in the form of charts to help users understand how their money is spent over time. An object-oriented methodology was adopted for the analysis and design of the system. Fact-finding techniques such as online research and observation were used to gather requirements. The system was tested using unit and integration testing to confirm its functionality and reliability. This project aims to address the challenges faced by Nigerian students and low-income earners in managing their finances by providing a simple, user- friendly, and offline-capable mobile solution. The developed system offers a practical way to improve financial discipline and contributes to the growing field of mobile fintech applications in Nigeria.
