Abstract

ABSTRACT Oral health is more than clean teeth—it is a reflection of overall well-being. Among the microorganisms implicated in dental caries, Streptococcus mutans remains one of the most aggressive contributors. This study investigates the comparative efficacy of five commercially available toothpaste brands on Streptococcus mutans isolated from patients attending a Dental Medical Center in Aba, Abia State. A total of bacterial samples were collected and cultured using standard microbiological techniques. The isolates were subjected to antimicrobial sensitivity testing using the agar well diffusion method. Zones of inhibition were measured and analyzed to determine the relative effectiveness of each toothpaste. Results revealed significant variations in antibacterial activity among the five brands. Toothpastes containing higher fluoride concentration and additional antimicrobial agents demonstrated greater inhibitory effects against Streptococcus mutans. The findings highlight the importance of informed consumer choice and reinforce the role of toothpaste formulation in preventing dental caries. This study contributes to ongoing efforts in improving oral hygiene practices and emphasizes the need for continuous evaluation of dental care products in local contexts.
