Abstract

This study examines the health and social implications of drug abuse among youths in Limanci Ward of Kano Dala Local Government. Drug abuse has become a significant public health and social challenge, particularly among youths, whose engagement in illicit substances often leads to both immediate and long-term consequences. The study seeks to identify the types of drugs commonly abused, understand the health risks associated with their use, and assess the social disruptions that result from drug abuse. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for this study, with 126 questionnaires administered to selected youths in Limanci Ward. A total of 120 completed questionnaires were retrieved and analyzed, representing a response rate of 95.2%. Data were analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, and tables to provide a clear depiction of the patterns and impacts of drug abuse. The findings revealed that substances such as cannabis, alcohol, tramadol, and other prescription drugs are commonly abused by youths, largely due to peer pressure, curiosity, unemployment, and family-related issues. Health implications identified include mental health disorders, physical deterioration, increased susceptibility to accidents, and substance dependence. Socially, drug abuse was found to negatively affect educational performance, family relationships, and community engagement, with many youths engaging in criminal activities as a result of substance abuse. The study concludes that drug abuse among youths in Limanci Ward poses significant health and social challenges that require urgent attention from policymakers, community leaders, health practitioners, and families. Recommendations include the implementation of community-based awareness programs, rehabilitation initiatives, and stricter enforcement of drug control policies to mitigate the prevalence and impact of drug abuse. Addressing these issues is crucial to fostering the health, well-being, and productive participation of youths in the community. Keywords: Drug abuse, Youths, Health implications and Social implications.
