ETHICAL STANDARD AND FRAUD CONTROL IN NIGERIA COMMERCIAL BANKS (A STUDY OF FIRST BANK AND UBA BANK PLC, ABA)
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Fraud has remained one of the most persistent challenges confronting the Nigerian banking sector, threatening financial stability, public confidence, and institutional integrity. This study investigates the role of ethical standards in controlling fraud within Nigerian commercial banks, with a specific focus on First Bank and UBA Plc in Aba.
The study adopts a descriptive research design, utilizing both primary and secondary data. Questionnaires and interviews were administered to bank staff to gather firsthand insights into ethical practices and fraud control mechanisms. Findings reveal that while both banks have established ethical frameworks and internal controls, lapses in enforcement, staff compromise, and systemic weaknesses continue to enable fraudulent activities.
The study concludes that ethical standards significantly influence fraud control, but their effectiveness depends largely on strict enforcement, organizational culture, and management commitment. Recommendations include strengthening ethical training, enhancing internal controls, and fostering a culture of accountability and transparency.
