Abstract

ABSTRACT Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by persistent hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. The global prevalence of diabetes continues to rise, creating an urgent need for alternative therapeutic agents that are safe, accessible, and affordable. Medicinal plants have long served as valuable sources of therapeutic compounds, particularly in developing countries where traditional medicine remains widely practiced. This study investigated the effects of leaf extract of Mangifera indica (mango) on blood glucose levels and white blood cell counts in alloxan-induced diabetic albino rats. Twenty albino rats were divided into control and experimental groups. Diabetes was induced using alloxan monohydrate. Mango leaf extract was administered orally to treatment groups over a specified experimental period. Blood glucose levels were measured using standard biochemical methods, while hematological analysis was conducted to determine white blood cell counts. The findings indicated that administration of Mangifera indica leaf extract significantly reduced blood glucose levels in diabetic rats. Additionally, improvement in white blood cell counts was observed, suggesting potential immunomodulatory properties of the plant extract. The results support the hypothesis that mango leaf extract possesses antidiabetic and immune-supportive properties. These findings contribute to the growing body of scientific evidence supporting the therapeutic potential of medicinal plants and highlight Mangifera indica as a promising candidate for further pharmacological studies.
