Abstract

This study examined the impact of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) competence on the performance of office professionals in selected public polytechnics in Oyo State, Nigeria. The research aimed to determine the level of ICT competence among office professionals, assess their performance in administrative tasks, and evaluate the influence of ICT competence on overall job effectiveness. A descriptive survey design was adopted, and a sample of 90 office professionals was drawn from four polytechnics using proportionate stratified random sampling. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire and analysed using descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (Chi-square test) at a 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that office professionals demonstrated high ICT competence, which positively influenced their performance, particularly in efficiency, accuracy, communication, and task management. Factors such as organisational support, training, and availability of ICT infrastructure were found to enhance both competence and performance, while resistance to change and workload stress were identified as constraints. The study concluded that ICT competence is a critical determinant of office professional performance and recommended continuous training, improved technological infrastructure, and supportive institutional policies to enhance administrative efficiency. The findings contribute to knowledge by linking ICT skills with performance outcomes and applying the Theory of Planned Behaviour and TOE framework to the higher education administrative context.
