QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS OF GLUTATHIONE AND VITAMIN C CONTAINING FACE SERUMS USING TITRIMETRIC METHOD
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Cosmetics are products which are supposed to be rubbed, poured, sprinkled or sprayed on or implemented to the human frame or any element thereof for cleansing, beautifying, selling attractiveness or changing appearance, it’s uses ranges from enhancing attractiveness to seduction, intimidation and concealing signs of ageing. There exist various kinds of cosmetic products, and this study was carried out to analyze Glutathione and Vitamin C used in various cosmetic products, their contents and various concentrations using Titrimetric method of analysis. Appropriate precautions, procedure and instrumentation were adopted to obtain reliable and verifiable data. Twelve samples of different brands of Vitamin C and Glutathione (six samples each) were obtained and titrated against 0.01M KIO3with starch as an indicator. The colour change from colourless to light yellow upon titration of the various samples with potassium iodate to blue black on addition of starch, then colourless upon reaching the end point verifies the presence of the samples. The equation of the line obtained from the calibration curve of Vitamin C was used to calculate the concentration of the six samples of Glutathione.
The concentrations of Vitamin C samples obtained were up to the official specifications of Vitamin C use in cosmetics, especially in face serums, the specifications that being 2% to 20%. The concentrations of Glutathione samples obtained didn’t meet up to the official specifications of the concentration of Glutathione used in cosmetics for skin lightening and brightening, the specifications being 0.1% to 0.5%. Titrimetric method of analysis has been proven effective and efficient in the analysis of Vitamin C and Glutathione and can also be further used in the analysis of other cosmetic compounds.
