GENDER AND DISPARITIES: THE NIGERIAN EXPERIENCE
Abstract
Gender disparities in Nigerian politics remain a significant concern, despite global and national efforts to promote inclusivity. Women, who constitute nearly half of the country’s population, continue to be underrepresented in elective and appointive positions, holding less than 10% of political offices. This study examines the extent of female political participation in Nigeria, identifies the key barriers hindering women from accessing leadership positions, and evaluates the effectiveness of existing policies and legal frameworks aimed at fostering gender inclusivity. The research also explores the role of political parties, economic constraints, cultural norms, and political violence in shaping women’s electoral participation. Using a mixed-method research design, data was collected through questionnaires distributed to political stakeholders, interviews with female politicians, and secondary data from governmental and non-governmental reports. Statistical analysis was conducted to test the study’s hypotheses, revealing that cultural norms, financial barriers, weak enforcement of affirmative action policies, and political party structures significantly impact women's participation in governance. The findings suggest that while awareness of gender equality has increased, practical implementation of gender-inclusive policies remains weak. Comparative analyses with countries like Rwanda and South Africa illustrate how effective legal frameworks and enforced gender quotas can significantly enhance female representation in politics. The study concludes that achieving gender parity in Nigerian politics requires a multi-faceted approach, including stricter implementation of gender quotas, financial and institutional support for female candidates, and stronger protections against electoral violence. It recommends that the Nigerian government, political parties, and civil society organizations collaborate to dismantle systemic barriers and create an enabling environment for women’s political inclusion. Addressing these challenges will not only enhance democratic governance but also contribute to national development by ensuring diverse and inclusive policymaking.
