Abstract

ABSTRACT This study was conducted to assess the diversity and abundance of bird’s species in Sa’adu Zungur University Main Campus, Bauchi State A total of 138 individuals’ bird’s species distributed in to 9 species belonging to 6 different families were recorded across two main sites in Sa’adu Zungur University main campus, Bauchi State. The birds species recorded were; Streptopelia senegalensis, Columbia guinea, Tockus nasutus, Bubulcus ibis, Ardea purpurea, Accipiter badius, Tockus erythrorhynchus, Cinnyris pulchellus and Tyto alba. The New site had the highest abundance of 98 (71.01%) bird individuals as compared with the Old site with the abundance of 40 (28.99%) individuals respectively. Bubulcus ibis had the highest abundance across the two main sites 37 (26.81%), followed by Streptopelia senegalensis 27 (19.57%), Cinnyris pulchellus 19 (13.77%), Ardea purpurea 16 (11.59%), Accipiter badius 13 (9.42%), Tockus erythrorhynchus 8 (5.80%), Columbia guinea, and Tockus nasutus 7 (5.7%) both while Tyto alba had the least abundance across the sites 4 (2.90%) respectively. Out of the total number of individuals recorded from the two main sites, Old site had the abundance of 40 individuals, while New site had the abundance of 98 individuals. New site had the highest diversity, evenness and species richness (1.99, 0.83 and 19.41) as compared with Old site (1.65, 0.69 and 8.4) respectively (Table 3). Columbidae had the highest percentage of species (23%), followed by Bucerotidae and Ardeidae with (22%) each while Accipitridae, Nectariniidae and Tytonidae had a least percentage of (11%) each. Bird species are diverse within the Sa’adu Zungur University main campus, Bauchi State and they can survive in the area with massive infrastructure and other construction activities and Neem area which provides water and food all year round respectively. However, the wide range space habitat had the high capacity to sustain birdlife within the campus due to the complex vegetation and minimal infrastructural development. There is urgent need to aggressively plant trees in the New site habitat as a priority, and in other habitat which is the Old site that may be cleared in the future for development, so as to increase the abundance and diversity of bird species within the campus
