Abstract

This study examined the factors influencing farmers’ participation in community development activities in Jere Local Government Area, Borno State. A total of 100 respondents were surveyed using structured questionnaires. The results revealed that farmers are predominantly middle-aged, male, moderately educated, and experienced, with low-to-average income levels. Participation levels varied, with the highest involvement recorded in attendance at community meetings (55%) and the lowest in leadership roles (33%). Key factors influencing participation included access to credit (82%), education (75%), income (70%), leadership support (64%), and availability of extension services (68%). Challenges such as inadequate funding (74%), poor leadership (62%), insecurity (56%), and low awareness of programs (58%) constrained engagement. Regression analysis showed that education, access to credit, and income were the most significant determinants of participation, explaining 73% of the variation. The findings highlight the importance of financial empowerment, literacy, and institutional support in promoting active farmer engagement in community development. Recommendations include providing credit facilities, enhancing educational and awareness programs, strengthening leadership and transparency, and addressing security concerns to improve participation and sustainable community development.
