PHYTOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF BRYOPHYLLUM PINNATUM LEAVES (AFRICAN NEVER DIES)
Abstract
Abstract
Bryophyllum pinnatum (commonly called “African Never Dies” or “Miracle Leaf”) is a succulent medicinal plant traditionally used in Africa and Asia for the treatment of various ailments including wounds, ulcers, hypertension, and infections. This study was conducted to evaluate the phytochemical constituents of B. pinnatum leaves using standard qualitative screening techniques. Methanolic and aqueous extracts of the leaves were analyzed for the presence of secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, terpenoids, steroids, phenols, and glycosides. Results revealed the abundant presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, and tannins, while steroids and glycosides were moderately present. The phytochemical profile supports the traditional uses of B. pinnatum as a medicinal plant and indicates its potential as a source of bioactive compounds with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties.
