Abstract

This study examined the socio-economic implications of drug abuse among youths in Bauchi Metropolis, with particular emphasis on identifying common drugs abused, assessing their socio-economic consequences, and evaluating the effectiveness of existing measures in tackling the menace. The research was motivated by the rising prevalence of substance abuse among young people in Nigeria, which poses severe threats to public health, economic stability, and community security. The study adopted a survey research design, using a structured questionnaire as the primary instrument for data collection. A total of 389 respondents, comprising youths from different wards of Bauchi Metropolis, were purposively and randomly selected to ensure adequate representation of both genders, various educational levels, and diverse socio-economic backgrounds. The questionnaire contained both closed-ended and Likert-scale items designed to elicit quantitative and qualitative responses on the causes, consequences, and control measures of drug abuse. Findings from the analysis revealed that cannabis, tramadol, codeine syrup, and inhalants were the most frequently abused substances. Peer influence, unemployment, and easy accessibility to drugs emerged as significant factors driving youth involvement in substance abuse. The socio-economic implications identified included reduced productivity, academic failure, increased criminal activity, and family instability. While government agencies, religious institutions, and non-governmental organizations have initiated several awareness and rehabilitation programs, the study found that their impact was limited due to inadequate funding, weak enforcement of drug control laws, and poor community participation. The study concludes that drug abuse among youths in Bauchi Metropolis remains a critical socio-economic challenge requiring urgent, multifaceted intervention. It recommends strengthening family-based guidance, expanding youth empowerment initiatives, enhancing the capacity of rehabilitation centers, and improving collaboration among stakeholders to create a sustainable and drug-free environment.
