Abstract

This study investigated the ecological significance of Calotropis procera in enhancing soil quality and supporting pollinators in a semi-arid region. Soil and insect samples were collected from underneath C. procera plants, adjacent areas, and control sites in Federal Polytechnic Damaturu, Nigeria. Results showed significantly higher soil pH, organic matter, nitrogen, and phosphorus content underneath C. procera plants. Additionally, the abundance of bees, butterflies, and moths was significantly higher underneath C. procera plants. The findings highlight C. procera’s potential for soil conservation and pollinator-friendly practices in semi-arid regions, emphasizing its ecological significance in environmental interaction. The study contributes to the understanding of plant species’ roles in maintaining ecosystem balance and promotes sustainable environmental management practices. Keywords: Calotropis procera, ecological significance, soil quality, pollinators, semi-arid regions, environmental interaction.
