COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THE ANTI-MICROBIAL ACTIVITIES OF AQUEOUS EXTRACTS OF BITTER LEAF (VERNONIA AMYGDALINA) AND SCENT LEAF( OCIMUM GRATISSIUM)
Abstract
The antimicrobial properties of natural compounds have gained significant attention due to the rise of antibiotic resistance. In this study, we investigated the antimicrobial activity of bitter (Vernonia amygdalina) and scent (Ocimum gratissimum) leaves extracted using water. The leaves were subjected to extraction, and the resulting extracts were tested against staphylococcus aureus and Echerichia coli. The antimicrobial activity was assessed using agar disc diffusion method and Our results demonstrated notable antimicrobial activity for scent leaf extracts beyond comparison to bitter leaf, bitter leaf was found not against the microorganisms. This shows that the aqueous extracts of scent leaf exhibited significant inhibition against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. These findings underscore the potential of scent leaf as natural sources of antimicrobial agents, with implications for the development of novel therapeutic strategies against microbial infections. Therefore, scent leaf has a promising antimicrobial activity which could be use in pharmaceutical industries.
